Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA (1887 - 1976) left a legacy of his drawings and paintings which mainly depict the poorer and more industrial areas of Pendlebury, Greater Manchester and its surrounds. Lowry's scenes of life with rhythmic crowds were often rough sketches made on the spot outdoors, on whatever paper he had on hand, originating after a moment of inspiration after missing a train.
More finished drawings were made later and, after about 1910, he only ever painted at home in what he referred to as his workroom, using very restricted palette of only five colours – flake white, ivory black, vermilion (red), Prussian blue and yellow ochre.
Lowry became Britain's most famous living painter in the mid 1950's, despite never being a full-time artist. He had in fact walked the streets of Manchester as a rent collector for four decades until his retirement in 1952. This part of his story was long kept hidden from an admiring public and was only revealed after his death.
"had I not been lonely, none of my work would have happened. I should not have … seen the way I saw things"
