Maurice Askew (1921-2020)
Maurice Askew was born in Redditch, near Birmingham, England in 1921. In 1944, aged twenty-two, he became a prisoner of war after being shot down during a bombing mission over Leipzig. After the war’s end, he studied and taught in Birmingham; from 1956 he worked in Manchester with Granada Television, designing sets for new programmes such as Coronation Street. These exquisite paintings in watercolour attest to the affection he retained for Britain’s industrial north.
Askew then came to New Zealand in 1962 with his family to set up the graphic design department at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury (UC). He retired in 1981 but went on to illustrate a number of children's books, paintings and write several books. He also remained heavily involved in the Canterbury Film Society, which he was the president of for a time.
