Austin Howard Davies (1926-2012)
Davies was a British-born artist and arts administrator who made a significant contribution to the cultural life of Nelson. Born in Liverpool, he studied at the Liverpool School of Art from 1946–51.
He later moved to New Zealand and, in 1976, became the first professional Director of the Suter Art Gallery (now Te Aratoi o Whakatū) in Nelson, raising the gallery’s profile in the region.
As an artist, Davies worked in painting, collage and design. His practice reflected his British training and his later New Zealand context. While much of his administrative work is better documented than his personal art-practice, his dual role as creator and leader in the arts made him a respected figure.
