John Buckland Wright (1897–1954)
Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, Buckland Wright studied history at Oxford and then architecture in London. He soon realised that he wanted to be an artist more than an architect and by 1921 he was living in Belgium and was elected a member of the Gravure Originale Belge in 1925.
John Buckland Wright joined the Paris art school L’Atelier 17 under William Hayter in the early 1930s and commenced a period of great productivity, interacting with some of the most exciting artists of the time, including Miro, Matisse and Picasso. During this time his art took on the forms and ideas of surrealism and abstraction.
His work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Remarks: On the back of the work is a sticker from Mayor Gallery, London, with catalogue number '7572' stamped, there is also a further catalogue code 'E9827-B' scribed in yellow chalk - a signature of Sotheby's auction house.
