Eileen Mayo DBE

1906 – 1994

Born in Norwich, England, Dame Eileen Mayo was recognised as an innovative artist and designer, working in many mediums. Influence from both her works and her teaching, was significant throughout Australasia.

Mayo studied art in London at the Slade School, the Central School of Arts and Crafts and at the Chelsea Polytechnic where she was taught by Henry Moore. She exhibited widely, taught at Saint Martins School of Art and spent time on the continent.

After her marriage ended in 1952 she immigrated to Australia where she taught at the National Art School in Sydney.

Mayo achieved considerable fame for her design of stamps, both in Australia and later New Zealand. The stamps depicted Australian flora and fauna with widely sold posters of her designs. In New Zealand in the 1970s she designed a series of stamps of native moths and fish.

In 1962 Mayo came to New Zealand as her mother and sister lived in Waimate. She taught at Canterbury University, spent time working at Otago Museum and lived out her retirement in Christchurch. Her work is held in the collections of all New Zealand major galleries.
