Rata Lovell-Smith both studied and taught at Christchurch College School of Arts.
The Canterbury landscape, and flora and fauna were regular subjects in her paintings. Her style was characterised by bold composition and the use of flat areas of colour and she was recognised as being part of the group of painters active in the 1930’s that significantly changed the way the New Zealand landscape and light was represented in painting. The landscape became cleared with hard lines creating more linear forms. The colonial romanticism disappeared. The works of these paintings remain very significant.
