Ralph Hotere ONZ. 1931 -2013
“Ralph” Hone Papita Raukura Hotere was born in Northland, of Te Aupouri and Te Parawa descent.
After high school Hotere studied art at Auckland Teachers Training College and in 1952 moved to Dunedin continuing his studies at King Edward Technical College. In 1961 he was awarded a New Zealand Art Society Fellowship to travel and study in London at the Central School of Art and Design. Hotere then spent time travelling on the Continent absorbing the current Pop and Op art movements as well as historic works in galleries.
On his return to New Zealand Hotere eventually settled in Dunedin. He explored various mediums throughout his career, and also enjoyed collaborating on works with friends including with poets Bill Manhire and Hone Tuwhare. Politics was always a strong influence on his work; from the proposed smelter at Aromoana, to the Springbok tour and events with Greenpeace etc.
Hotere's work continues to be highly sought after by collectors in New Zealand and beyond. Works are held and displayed in all major art institutions throughout New Zealand. He is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most significant artists.
