Clark Esplin 1941 –
Esplin was born in Scotland and immigrated with his family to New Zealand in 1954. They settled in Dunedin where his father Tom Esplin made a successful career as an artist. Clark studied in Dunedin then went on to teach at local high schools. He also spent time painting in Europe before settling in Christchurch.
On his art, he says:
"I am passionate about sailing, my early water colours were often of marine subjects in a free and fluid style. I enjoyed the challenge of water colour, the opportunities it gave for composition with the white paper "en reserve", and the freshness that can be gained from a single statement. My later work has been a personal response mainly in water colours and acrylics to subjects I have encountered in my travels - sheltered harbours in Europe, people talking or going about their business in towns and markets in France, Japan or Latin America, and quiet hill towns in Italy. As I travel, I am constantly recording in my sketch-books subjects that excite and inspire me. I am editing all the time, nuntil I distil my statement. Although I am a New Zealander, growing up in Scotland helped me relate to the European artistic tradition. I enjoy painting people and places."
