Helen Campbell Brown
1917 – 1986
Helen Campbell Brown lived all her life in Auckland where she worked for 35 years as a packaging designer at the Banks Box Company. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, she took evening classes in painting at Elam Art School. Her teachers included the painter John Weeks. Weeks took his students on painting holidays in the King Country where they specialised in painting sombre landscapes and were encouraged to play with a form of soft Cubism to define the landscape with a more modernistic form. Weeks' students formed a group known as the Rutland Group and exhibited together over many years.
