Aston Greathead
1921 – 2012
Born in Napier, Aston Greathead grew up in Timaru. He had no formal art training, his first employment was as a sign writer. World War II intervened and he joined the army doing tours in North Africa and Italy. On his return from the war he set up his own sign writing business in Christchurch however this proved too stressful and so he moved his family to Kaikoura.
In 1966 Greathead won the Sir Henry Kelliher’s, Dawson Hallmark watercolour award. From this he achieved fame and many commissions. To have an Aston Greathead landscape in your home was a status symbol. He preferred to paint on location working in watercolour and painting sketches, which he then turned in to large paintings in acrylic or oil in his studio.
