Richard McWhannell
Richard McWhannell was born in Akaroa in 1952. He currently lives and works in Auckland. McWhannell studied at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in the 1970s. There he was taught by Rudolf Gopas and made friendships with Toss Woollaston and Tony Fomison. His paintings are influenced by events of the time, telling stories of New Zealand society.
His work is held in numerous public and private collections throughout the country.
This stunning work is from his Crossing the Lake Series, 2013, around art always being present in a range of historic events or situations both overseas and in NZ.
McWhannell chose Gilles, the sad 18th C clown as his symbol. In 'Who fed the baby', Gilles is seen in Pukekawa, reminding us of the highly emotional and political responses to the Crewe murders and the subsequent trials of Arthur Allan Thomas and commentary which continue to this day.
