Minnie Pwerle
c1915 – 2006
Minnie Pwerle grew up on a cattle station, Utopia. 300 K north-east of Alice Springs. Utopia was returned to First Nation ownership in the late 1970s.
Minnie began painting at the age of 80 in 2000. For the next six years she was obsessed, and equally the public became completely fascinated by her work and her back story. Many of the female members of her extended family were also part of the Utopian Art Movement and achieved significant recognition.
“Minnie's paintings include two main design themes. The first is free-flowing and parallel lines in a pendulous outline, depicting the body painting designs used in women's ceremonies, or awelye. The second theme involves circular shapes, used to symbolise bush tomato (Solanum chippendalei), bush melon, and northern wild orange (Capparis umbonata), among a number of forms of bushfood represented in her works.” Wikapedia
Pwerle’s works remain highly collectable both in Australia and internationally.
