Ann Jane (Jenny) Wimperis
1844 – 1929
Jenny Wimperis was born in the UK and immigrated to New Zealand in 1880 to join her sister Susanna who was living with her family in Dunedin.
Wimperis’s father had been a drawing teacher and he encouraged her and her siblings to both draw and paint. She also studied in Antwerp and Hanover, exhibiting with the Royal Society of British Art in London prior to her departure.
Living in Dunedin Wimperis became known as a watercolourist. She joined the Otago Art Society and was also encouraged by local solicitor William Hodgkins to join an art club he had formed. Hodgkins also engaged Wimperis to tutor his daughter Frances. Frances Hodgkins went on to become one of New Zealand’s most influential and highly regarded painters.
Wimperis painted portraits, landscapes and the New Zealand bush, Her work was widely exhibited. She returned to England in 1916 and lived in Surrey until her death in 1929.
