Betty Mbitjama
1957 – 2023
Betty Mbitjama was part of the Utopia artist community in the Northern Territory. Her mother was artist Minnie Pwerle. Minnie’s work had been inspired by her ‘Dreamings’ of “Awelye – Atnwengerrp” and “Bush Melon”. To illustrate these she had used designs from Awelye female body painting imagery.
Betty continued to use this imagery in her paintings. Bold linear stripes and curves dominate the works. Traditionally for ceremonial occasions the women paint designs on their upper torso using their fingers or a typale, a brush made from a stick. Natural dye colours of red, white and ochre were used.
