Thomas Tjapaltjarri
Born c1964 –
Thomas Tjapaltjarri was born in the Gibson Desert, Western Australia. His family were known as the last nomads, the ‘Pintupi Nine’, as they lived the traditional nomadic lifestyle and did not have contact with Western society until 1984.
Thomas paints in a bold minimal style distinguished by simple geometric designs and intricate dotting techniques. His inspiration is the sacred stories from ‘Tingari – Men’s Creation Dreamings’. This is deeply rooted in the many Pintupi sacred sites and ceremonial practices of his ancestral homeland and people.
His brothers Warlimpirrnga and Walala Tjapaltjarri are also notable artists.
Thomas’s contributions to indigenous art have been honoured with his inclusion in significant exhibitions, most recently in the National Museum of Australia’s ‘Connection – Songlines from Australia’s First People ‘ held in 2022.
