Tony Fomison (1939 – 1999)

Born in Christchurch in 1939 Fomison attended Linwood High School and then studied sculpture at Ilam School of Fine Arts at Canterbury University. Key to his work was his interest in incorporating into the composition elements of both narrative and myth. In 1964 Fomison was able to travel to Europe on an Arts Advisory Board grant and stayed away for 3 years. Sadly over this period he had issues with drug addiction for which he was, at times, hospitalised. He returned to Christchurch in 1967.

Fomision spent a period working at the Canterbury Museum as an archaeological assistant and was significantly involved with a research project that explored 300 Maori rock art sites in South Canterbury.

In 1973 he moved to Auckland and became fascinated with the Polynesian culture around him. Fomison was tattooed by Samoan master tattooist Sua Sulu’ape Paulo II with a pe’a traditional male tattoo.

Fomison’s work is held in all major gallery collections in New Zealand and is sought after by collectors. His prices in the secondary market continue to rise.
