Based in Cromwell, Rachel Hirabayshi was a founding member of the Cromwell Hullabaloo artist’s collective and is now a member of Indigo, a group of 8 artists with varying disciplines, born out of a commitment to support one another through collective exhibiting.
Hirabayashi has a large garden surrounding her 110 year old cottage, which she also shares with 2 dogs. Rachel is a full time artist painting in acrylics and also making metal sculptures. She has travelled extensively and has lived in both Japan and Mexico, significant influences in her work.
Largely self taught, Hirbayashi began her career as a children’s book illustrator in Auckland. She later gained a degree in art history. Currently her works are ‘emotional memory’. The recent series of works is called Pioneers, Flood and Gold Town. There are repeated compositional themes and elements in her works such as early settler’s dwellings, humble churches and stone buildings set in vast still local landscapes.
