Joanna Margaret Paul

Paul grew up in Wellington before attending the University of Auckland where she gained a BA and a Diploma of Fine Arts. Her teachers at Elam included Colin McCahon and Greer Twiss, and amongst her fellow students were Christine Hellyar, Marte Szimay and Leon Narbev. She moved to Dunedin with her husband painter Jeffrey Harris and they had 4 children.
Her multi-disciplinary practice spanned drawing, painting, poetry, photography and film. She saw her work as a response to her immediate surroundings and everyday life. It has a times been described as the ultimate visual diary.
During her life she received several awards and significant show were held in major institutions. Paul spent the later part of her life living in Whanganui.
