Kudditji Kngwarreye ( Known as Goob)1938 – 2017
Kudditji Kngwarreye is one of the most highly regarded contemporary indigenous Australian artists. He was born in the Utopia community in the Northern Territory and is a brother of artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
Geoffrey Bardon began teaching art in the Papunya community in 1971. He had encouraged his students to use the distinctive Aboriginal dot patterns of representation on large canvases, a style to dominate Aboriginal art. In contrast at the Utopia community Kngwarreye was encouraged to use larger brushes and to use the paint as an expressive medium. Kngwarreye mastered the use of acrylic painting on canvas. The canvases were filled with simple shapes of different colours that told his personal stories of Emu Dreamings, the sites, and the ceremonies he partook in and visited as a Anmatyerre elder teaching men’s business.
Internationally Kngwarreye has often been compared to Mark Rothko as both through abstracted form and skill with colour create a unique intensity in their work.
His work continues to be highly collectable.
