Chris Heaphy
1965 –
New Zealand born Chris Heaphy is of Maori and European descent. In 1991 he graduated from llam University School of Fine Art, Canterbury University, with a BFA in painting. Later, in 1998, he completed a MFA at RMIT University, Melbourne.
Over the course of his career Heaphy has been awarded several grants including the Oliver Spencer Bower Fellowship in 1995. In 2001 he completed artist residency programmes in France at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris, and the Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin Resdency, Champagne.
Heaphy’s painting technique is rich. This and his skill with colour add to the vibrancy and depth of his work. Themes of time, place and memory co-inside with cultural perspectives and the use of symbolic motifs adds to the visual and conceptual depth.
