Denny Dent
1948 - 2004
Sometimes referred to as “the only rock and roll painter”, and sometimes as the “kid playing in the mud”, Dent was certainly one of the most famous speed painters in history. Denny Dent himself referred to his work as "a passionate dance on canvas".
Dent’s hugely popular “Two-Fisted Art Attack” was a performance incorporating music, dance, and painting with both hands, three brushes in each. His energy complimented his skill and his speed painting sessions often left his audience mesmerised.
Born in 1948 in Denver, Colorado, Dent’s humble origins included his artist mother, and his ambidextrous cabinet making grandfather. Despite not finishing school, his artistic drive and need to express himself were immense and the uniqueness of his performance saw him in high demand, painting as an opening act for bands and on other occasions. He fell under the spotlight with his legendary performance at Woodstock in 1994, where he painted in front of 300,000 people.
The range of Dent’s subjects included renowned musicians such as John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner, NHL and NASCAR sportsmen, and politicians including former U.S. President Bill Clinton and New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani amongst others.
