Don Peebles  ONZM

1922 – 2010

Painter Don Peebles is recognised as the leading force behind the evolution of abstract painting in New Zealand.

Peebles was born near Whakatane in Taneatua. By 1937 the family had relocated to Wellington. During 1941 to 1945 he served in the New Zealand army based in the Pacific, and later Italy.  Prior to coming home at the end of the war he spent time studying art in Florence. Travelling to London in the early 60’s he met constructionist artist Victor Pasmore and embraced a new style of painting aimed at “getting to the essence of an object”. Peebles became known for his relief constructions - paint on unstretched canvas.

From 1965 Peebles taught at Canterbury University Ilam Art School, becoming head of painting in 1980. His work is  held in many significant collections throughout New Zealand.
