Douglas Kerr MacDiarmid

1922 – 2020

To some Douglas MacDiarmid is one of the most underrated New Zealand artists. For most of his life he lived and worked in France, dying of Covid there in 2022. MacDiarmid was born in Taihape, sent to Timaru Boys High School for his secondary years, and later studied at the University of Canterbury.

He had no formal art training but while living in Christchurch during the 1940’s he met and was mentored by members of ‘The Group’, an avant-garde collection of artists. The use of colour in his work was recognised as exceptional. Over his many years in Paris he experimented with differing twentieth-century art movements.

In 1990 the New Zealand Government brought MacDiarmid back home to be part of the sesquicentennial celebrations where he was named a living cultural treasure.

MacDiarmid’s work is held in major international collections, including both the New Zealand and French Governments, and also in many private collections.
