John Drawbridge MBE (1930 – 2005) has been regarded as one of New Zealand’s most significant artists. His art practice included painting, printmaking and large mural art. In the early 1960’s he created a significant mural for the foyer of New Zealand House in London, in the 1970’s another mural was created for the Beehive, 42 meters long and 4.8 meters high, and also a mural to represent New Zealand at the International Expo in Japan in 1970.
Born in Wellington, apart from travel in the early 1960’s to the UK Drawbridge lived for 40 years in Island Bay. He taught printmaking for 30 years at Wellington Polytech School of Design ( later this became Massey University College of Creative Arts). Many regarded him as an intellectual artist for his deep knowledge and genuine interest in Art History. His work was regarded as having strong international influences yet he saw himself as primarily a New Zealand artist.
