Edgar MacLeod Lovell Smith
1875 – 1950
Edgar Lovell-Smith was the younger brother of Canterbury artist Colin Lovell-Smith, married to artist Rata Lovell-Smith. Edgar attended Canterbury College of Art before travelling to the UK where he furthered his studies at Kensington Art School in Bristol, and later at Technical School Bolt Court London. On his return to Christchurch he worked as a Lithographer at Smith and Antony but did continue to paint, largely in watercolour. His paintings were also used as means of documenting his fascination with stage-coaches.
Canterbury Museum holds his research about New Zealand stage-coaches and the manuscript for his unpublished book about Canterbury and Westland Stage Coaches. It also has 30 ink drawings and watercolours of stage-coaches.
