James Patrick (Pat) Hanly (1932 -2004) was born in Palmerston North. He left high school at the end of the 4th form as his parents had organised a hairdressing apprenticeship for him. Hanly took evening classes in drawing and painting which led to him being accepted as a student at Canterbury College School of Art in Christchurch. It was here he also met and married fellow arts student Gill Taverner.

From Christchurch he went on to travel to Europe and to study at the Chelsea Art School, London. Four years and two children later the couple made the big decision to return to New Zealand. Pat took up a part-time teaching position at the University of Auckland School of Architecture.

Hanly is one of the most highly regarded New Zealand artists. His passion for colour and the expressionist forms that dominated his work is unique. His work is held in most public collections in New Zealand. There are also significant murals in the Christchurch Town Hall, Auckland Airport and the Aotea Centre. In his later years his political stance as an anti-nuclear activist dominated the imagery in his work.
