Bill Culbert, MNZM (1935 – 2019)

Bill Culbert was born in Port Chalmers, Dunedin. His family the moved north and he attended Hutt Valley High School. Then he headed south to attend Ilam School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University.

There he was part of the group of artists including Pat Hanly, Gill Taverner, Quentin McFarlane, Trevor Moffitt, Ted Bracey and Hamish Keith who all shared a large house on Armagh Street. It was well known as a creative hub. Culbert left when he received a scholarship in 1957 to study at the Royal College of Art, London.

He went on to have a distinguish career exhibiting both in New Zealand and abroad . He was noted especially for his use of light in paintings, photography, sculpture and installation work.

He did several collaborative works with Ralph Hotere.

In 2013 he represented New Zealand at the Venice Biennale with ‘Front Door Out Back’.

‘Void’ 2006 is in the atrium at Te Papa Tongarewa , the Museum of New Zealand, Wellington.

SoFA Series

The SoFA Print Project was organised by Professor Simon Ogden as a fundraiser in 2004. A portfolio of 24 prints by various artists associated with the Ilam School of Fine Arts was created. The sale of these raised $148,000.

The contributing artists were Don Binney, Joanna Braithwaite, L Budd, Barry Cleavin, Shane Cotton, Denise Copland, Bill Culbert, Bing Dawe, Neil Dawson, Tony de Lautour, Jeremy Diggle, Andrew Drummond, Jason Greig, Fiona Gunn, Bill Hammond, Rob McLeod, Julia Morison, Simon Ogden, Don Peebles, Seraphine Pick, Peter Robinson, Carole Shepheard, Cathryn Shine, Philip Trusttum.

A Complete set of prints was gifted to Victoria and Albert Museum, London, by Professor Simon Ogden.
