After studying photography, design and printmaking, Francis van Hout worked as a graphic artist, photographer, animation director and technical director on a variety of film, television, multimedia projects. Van Hout returned to Christchurch to continue his study at the University of Canterbury Ilam School of Fine Arts . He won the Sawtell-Turner Prize for Painting. In 2015 his work was recognised in the Parkin Drawing Award and as a finalist the National Contemporary Art Award.
Van Hout fills his artworks with playful dark humour. He references key elements of art history. The works are often planned digitally, however his paintings relies on painterly details, brush strokes and variations in the surface to create balance with the digital visual language.
