Banks Peninsula based artist, Anna Dalzell, captures our connection with the land, and her work is a tribute to what she holds dear in a rapid, ever-changing world. Dalzell’s art practice focuses mainly on intaglio printmaking, drawing and painting.
This is another work from Anna's ongoing series inspired by Ōnawe Peninsula. The small volcanic peninsula in Akaroa harbour, Ōnawe, is a place extremely sacred to Māori. An Atua ‘Te Pa Nui O Hau’ (The Goddess of the Wind) once dwelt on Ōnawe’s summit, and it was the site of a Ngāi Tahu pā. The invasion of Te Rauparaha and his warriors in 1853 decimated Ngāi Tahu people of Banks Peninsula, and, with brutal violence of battle and musket fire, silenced the Goddess of the Wind.
