New work from Grahame Sydney & Ralph Hotere

Art on Sunday! New work going LIVE tonight: we are excited to bring you works from two of New Zealand’s greats with a portrait from Grahame Sydney and a work from Ralph Hotere featuring his beloved home at Carey’s Bay, Dunedin.

Grahame Sydney ONZM (1948 – )

Since beginning his professional art life in 1974 he has worked as a painter, printmaker, photographer and writer and has become celebrated as the definitive painter of Central Otago. He has produced an enormously varied body of work: the luminous skies of Central Otago, his magnificent portraits, figure studies, still lifes, drawings and etchings.

"Sydney is a clever magician who plies his craft with great skill and subtlety, making paintings that are seemingly simple, but their plain reality tenders deeper emotions than simple recognition. You don’t just see the land here, you feel it… these hills, these skies give us a voice that is unique, a voice that is evoked by the art of Grahame Sydney. It is the voice of us all." Keith Stewart, Art Critic.

Ralph Hotere ONZ (1931 – 2013 )

This magnificent artwork, formerly in private ownership in Wellington, was recently purchased by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society so it could hang in Dunedin, home of Ralph Hotere.

The artist has generously allowed 65 actual size reproductions of the painting to be made and sold to assist with the raising of funds for the original acquisition.
