William Hogarth (1697-1764) Hogarth was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. Influenced by French and Italian painting and engraving, Hogarth's works are mostly satirical caricatures. They became widely popular and mass-produced via prints in his lifetime, and he was by far the most significant English artist of his generation.
This work - Tailpiece or The Bathos - depicts Father Time lying exhausted in a scene of destruction, parodying the fashion at that time for "sublime" works of art, and satirising criticisms made of Hogarth's own works. It may also be seen as a memento mori, foreshadowing Hogarth's death six months later. Titled Tailpiece, it was intended as the tailpiece for a bound edition of Hogarth's engravings.
