Jonathan R White (1938 – 2021) was known both in New Zealand and internationally as a skilled representational artist. He had lived in Whakatane for many years. White loved to tramp in remote areas of New Zealand and was particularly fond of Fiordland. This combined with his interest in Ornithology and conservation inspired much of his work. During the summer of 1989 – 1990 he travelled to Antarctica where he undertook a series of works depicting the historic buildings and the Dry Valley region. In 2021 White received the MNZM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for service to the arts and community.
