John Madden (1953 –) is the son of a Greymouth coal miner. He is recognised as both a ceramist and a painter. His paintings are abstract visions heavily texture with sand and glazes that give them a unique raw depth. In some he includes symbols, chalices and crosses that relate directly to us Celtic ancestry.
Madden studied at the School of Fine Arts, Canterbury University.
Since 1989 he had his home and studio in Karekare on the West Coast of the South Island.
