Jeffrey Harris (1949 –) was born in Akaroa in 1949. He is largely self-taught and through this process he was mentored by both Michael Smither and Ralph Hotere. Since 1970 he has painted full-time with periods spent living in Melbourne and the United States. He currently lives in Dunedin.
His works are characteristically expressionist oil paintings depicting daily life inspired by his own surroundings. During the 1980’s when he was based in Melbourne he did have a more abstract monochromatic period . More recent works include religious iconography rather than domestic scenes.
He is highly regarded and his works are held in major institutional collections. A retrospective exhibition toured New Zealand public galleries from 2004 – 2006. To
accompany this exhibition curator Justin Paton wrote the book Jeffrey Harris.
