Lyttelton based Mark Whyte graduated from the University of Canterbury with a BFA in Sculpture in 1984. He has become a specialist in stone heritage restoration. This work began in Wellington on the Parliament Refurbishment project in 1992. More recently he has worked on many buildings damaged by the Christchurch earthquakes.

Currently he is in Wanganui, working on restoration at the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui.

He is a specialist stone carver and known for his highly skilled work in marble. His work can be both traditional public statuary and contemporary abstract forms often with a strong political statement.


Whyte has also undertaken many commissions for works in bronze, including the large statue of Charles Upham, double Victoria Cross winner, at the entrance to Amberly, North Canterbury.
