Samuel Cairncross. 1913 – 1976
Samuel Cairncross was born in Marton, NZ in 1913. He was known for his sketching but was employed in a variety of jobs including as a hospital porter and a street photographer before he started painting in 1942. His work at the time was described as ‘realist modern painting’. He made sales. The French Consulate in Wellington awarded him a French Government Scholarship to study in Paris from 1947 – 1948. Cairncross exhibited widely in New Zealand on his return and also taught at times.
